Dale Levine
The Passage (Justin Cronin Edition)Dale Levine is a Watch member whose practical courage and abrupt disappearance mark the danger gathering beyond the Sanctuary’s Wall. He helps Peter plan an escape route, then takes part in Galen Strauss’s first command outside the Wall; when Galen turns to him for help, Dale is gone along with every other rider.
Role in the Sanctuary Escape
When Peter lays out a plan to get Sara and the girl from the Infirmary, Dale is assigned a crucial role on the Wall. Just before First Bell, he is to give a call sign so that Peter and the others can use the confusion to slip through the gate at sunrise and make for the power station. The plan makes Dale part of the escape’s timing and coordination, not merely an accompanying rider.
The group moves toward the Infirmary as dawn approaches, with only minutes to spare. Dale’s part depends on the others reaching the gate amid the confusion, linking his position on the Wall to their attempt to get Sara and the girl out safely.
First Ride Beyond the Wall
Later, Dale rides with Galen Strauss’s five-person party. Galen commands; Dale and Emily Darrell occupy the second position, while Hodd Greenberg and Cort Ramirez bring up the rear. It is Galen’s first command outside the Wall, and Dale is one of only two members of the Watch in the party. Galen regards the mission as a fool’s errand, but Dale’s presence places him among the people sent into the exposed landscape beyond the settlement.
The party rides through Banning, past collapsed buildings and dried-out bodies in cars. The Watch’s maxim about attackers coming from above has been drilled into its members since childhood, and the riders’ passage through the ruined town makes the danger concrete. Dale remains with the group as it approaches the ramp to the Eastern Road.
Disappearance
Galen’s sight is failing as the party rides. Glowing specks descend through his narrowing field of vision, and he turns toward Dale to ask whether someone else should take the point. Before he can finish, the space beside him is empty. Galen swivels in his saddle and finds no rider behind him: the entire party, mounts included, has vanished.
Dale’s fate is not explained in these scenes. His disappearance is presented through Galen’s sudden discovery, transforming a conversation about who should lead into an unanswered threat. The contrast between Dale’s earlier assigned role in a carefully timed escape and his later absence on the open road gives his appearances a sharp, unresolved arc.
